Message if the dolly has a swivel top then you'll want to keep the front wheels straight and lock the steering wheel. Then secure the steering wheel to the brake with a strong strap or rope so the wheel doesn't break the lock.

If the dolly has a fixed (non-swivel) top then you'll want to turn the key to the first detent which unlocks the steering so the car will follow properly. The wheels will need to turn when you do.

As far as making sure the car is secured properly on the dolly make sure the straps are not frayed and in good condition. Tighten them down until you see the tires start to compress. After you tow for a short distance make sure to stop and doublecheck the straps and connection at the coupler.

Lights... You will need to have lights on the rear of the vehicle regardless of what you've heard. Most states require lights or a flag of some type on anything beyond 4-6 ft past the vehicle lights. The lights on the dolly are for the dolly when towed alone. Once a vehicle is attached to the dolly you are required to have lights on it. Your best bet there is to visit U-Haul and purchase a set of lights. They have 3 types: magnetic types that are the most expensive, a trailer type light attached to a flap of plastic that you close in the jam of the trunk, and a light bulb that you put in place of the vehicle stop lamp.

Other than that just be careful and be prepared to stop leaving yourself plenty of stopping distance. Monitor your fluids in the towing vehicle and engine temps.

Good Luck and enjoy the ride
